Alex and AJ Talk Shop

Alex Lukas got a hold of AJ Fosik in Philly to explore the themes of his upcoming show, “There’s Aliens in Our Midst” opening this Saturday:

I do endorse the idea of traveling and moving as much as possible, being attached to nowhere and everywhere simultaneously . . . I used to just have one saw and an assortment of hand tools that I would lug around with me. Also, I was also dong more paintings, so my set up was very primitive, nothing I couldn’t put in the back of my truck. In the last couple of years my shop has really grown along with my work and it seems like every new tool I acquire opens up new possibilities to me so I really can’t imagine downsizing at this point. I don’t think I’m done moving either, but with the current manifestation of wood shop/ studio I don’t think paying off friends with beer is a viable moving option anymore. -AJ Fosik

Fecal Preview

We love getting mail; especially when it involves studio visit snapshots. Alex Lukas just sent us these images from his studio visit with AJ Fosik, which will be published with a full length interview on Fecal Face. Here’s a little taste of what’s to come:

Summers with AJ

The days are getting longer and the nights hotter; they say summer is just around the bend. AJ Fosik promises to bring us some sunshine with his June exhibition, “There’s Aliens in Our Midst,” filled with neon monsters and roaring smiles. We hear AJ is a traveler, and we liked this quote from Swindle‘s Issue 9:

Traveling is an incredible source of inspiration. That feeling of being completely alone and in a strange place is very energizing, yet there are also the common threads that run through so much of the country. It’s really endlessly amazing. Somebody said, “Half the fun of the travel is the aesthetic of lost-ness,” and I agree with that 100 percent. -Read the full interview here.

Alex on the Brain

Although Alex Lukas‘s immaculate disaster paintings have crumbled from our walls, a trip to Fecal Face just jogged our memory. We can’t believe this never made it to our blog, but better late than never (any excuse to showcase Alex’ gorgeous work).

With “And Another Shall To Take Her Place”, I don’t know, I was trying to title the show something that eludes to some destruction, in that whatever came before has fallen, but also speaks to an idea of an eventual renewal and rebirth. It is a sentiment that implies both defeat and optimism at once, and that idea is something I am interested in. -Alex Lukas, Fecal Face Interview
