Lowbrow Wave on a Highbrow Shore

Caleb Neelon is an established authority when it comes to lowbrow art. As a writer for Juxtapoz and Swindle magazines, the painter is accustomed to voicing his well-informed opinions about matter. The Boston Globe recently interviewed Caleb in the article “Lowbrow Art on the Highbrow Shore,” addressing East vs. West Coast receptions of the underground art movement.

“To say there are dozens of lowbrow art galleries in California would be an understatement,” says Caleb Neelon, a Cambridge artist and writer who had a show of such art in April in San Francisco and has written for Juxtapoz.

“California is its spiritual home,” Neelon says of the movement. “The market, and the people in California, are more forward thinking than on the East Coast, and certainly in Boston.” Trying to talk with Bostonians about lowbrow art, a frustrated Neelon adds, “is like talking to my parents.”

Summers with AJ

The days are getting longer and the nights hotter; they say summer is just around the bend. AJ Fosik promises to bring us some sunshine with his June exhibition, “There’s Aliens in Our Midst,” filled with neon monsters and roaring smiles. We hear AJ is a traveler, and we liked this quote from Swindle‘s Issue 9:

Traveling is an incredible source of inspiration. That feeling of being completely alone and in a strange place is very energizing, yet there are also the common threads that run through so much of the country. It’s really endlessly amazing. Somebody said, “Half the fun of the travel is the aesthetic of lost-ness,” and I agree with that 100 percent. -Read the full interview here.

Caleb Neelon’s Book of Awesome

No one can doubt how awesome Caleb Neelon is. He’s from Boston, his paintings are whimsically philosophical, and his soapbox writing is bitingly compelling. If you feel like taking a piece of his awesomeness home with you while indulging in his current show at White Walls, Book of Awesome is for you. We have a limited number of copies available here at White Walls, priced at $25 each, so be sure to pick one up next time you cruise by Larkin Street.

Opening Reception Snapshots: Waiting for Ararat

This Saturday was a classy affair with the opening of “Waiting for Ararat.” We were pleased to host the families of both artists, Caleb Neelon and Mike Shine, who were all in attendance. It was a fitting celebration for the impressive outcome of both artists’ hard work last week. We are very proud to present “Waiting for Ararat.”
