Video: D Young V at Cafe Royale

Here we go with our second video diary from D Young V. His May 2009 solo show at Cafe Royale titled Neighborhood Watch was the second installment of his “Live Forever” series, to be continued at Gallery Three this September. This video documents the politics behind Neighborhood Watch: the fall of capitalism, public safety, and the symbolism of military vehicles.

Keep your eyes out for D Young V’s San Francisco Youth Report opening next Saturday, September 12th at Gallery Three.

Bryan Schnelle in the House

In the House

You know an artist is dedicated when he continues to work after losing feeling in his thumbs. For the last 6 hours, Bryan Schnelle has laboriously pushed 500 pins into the wall of Gallery Three, and he’s still going strong. Schnelle’s efforts are well worth the pain, as an ominous myriad of black masks now adorns the gallery entrance. Check out Bryan at work and be sure to peek upstairs at the opening of Suicide Machine this Saturday, August 8th from 7-11pm.

Exclusive Interview: Bryan Schnelle

In anticipation of Suicide Machine opening this Saturday, August 8th

Interview by Gallery Three

Bryan Schnelle portrait

Bryan Schnelle is concerned about the world. He depicts the flawless beauties of our time as we might find them in magazine spreads or on the big screen, but don’t take this as an affirming gesture. By masking the faces of America’s stars, Bryan highlights the lies being fed through our televisions and computer screens. His work advertises the imperfect nature of our aesthetic heroes, but if you blink, you might miss it.

Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Bryan is a lighthearted and amiable guy. He wears the demeanor of a California carefree spirit, yet he is sensitive to Hollywood’s contaminating hold on society. Bryan isn’t afraid to tell it as it is, and we are ready to hear it.

Gallery Three Presents:

“Suicide Machine”

New Works by Bryan Schnelle

Opening Reception: August 8th 2009 from 7-11pm, and open to the public.

Showing: August 8th through September 7th, 2009

Gallery Three is proud to present “Suicide Machine”, a new body of works by Bryan Schnelle. “Suicide Machine” attempts to expose and explore human greed and the decomposition of ‘utopia’. This collection of satirical illustrations builds a platform for serious thought and reflection. Please join us for the opening reception on August 8th 2009 from 7-11pm.

Bryan Schnelle began entertaining himself with images of people wearing ski masks back in 2005. Since then, his work has become more realized and refined. Masked figure represents an unknown. The incognito character hides behind a dark veil of falsehood and deception; a metaphor for society. Schnell’s Old English script on white panels is authoritative and demanding, while the masked portraits creates an abrasive and uncomfortable combination. The backgrounds are left solid white to further illustrate the isolation of the world in which these characters inhabit. Continue reading
